General things about Sweden and Stockholm

A lot of things in Sweden can be done over the internet, check out the links provided here. Also, even in taxis it is common to pay by credit card. Thus, you do not need to carry a lot of Swedish cash. In the airport, the central station, and other tourist places you can find FOREX exchange booths. Sweden does not use Euros, they use Swedish Krona, here is an online currency converter. At the FOREX exchanges booths at the airport, you can also get your reimbursements for Tax-Free purchases, provided you reside outside the EU.

For information about Stockholm and all the things to see, visit the official Visitor web site Stockholm town (for English select the language in the top right corner). Stockholm has many museums, for example the Vasa museum, see also Stockholm - the Museum city and the Visitor web site. A good information booklet in English and Swedish is "What's On Stockholm" that you should be able to find at every hotel. You can find it also through the Stockholmtown web site. You can download its parts also as pdf files from the web site, for example, the downtown map. It contains listings of museums and current events.

A map of the North-West section of Stockholm highlights the Nobel Forum and several other places mentioned below. For additional map information you can visit the Swedish yellow pages (gula sidorna).

Here is a Swedish-English online dictionary.

Travel to Stockholm

By Air

Main airport: Arlanda. 40 km North of Stockholm.
Travel to/from airport:
Arlanda Express: From Arlanda you can take the high speed train to the central train station, cost 180 SEK.
Flygbussarna: Alternatively, you can take the airport bus, called "Flygbussarna" that also goes to Central Station, cost 89 SEK (170 SEK round trip). The advantage is that the Flygbuss stops at Haga Forum (next to Stallmästaregården), as well as near the Palace Hotel, if you stay in one of these hotels.
Taxi: Take care to take only official taxis, they are found at the taxi stands outside the airport terminals and usually are black with a yellow license plate. If someone offers you a ride inside the terminals, do not follow them. Taxis have a fixed price from Arlanda to Downtown Stockholm, the price is often posted on the taxi, and should not be more than 390 SEK.

Skavsta airport: located in the South, near Nyköping. The airport is mainly served by Ryanair. Flygbussarna has bus connection to downtown Stockholm, cost 130 SEK (199 SEK round trip).

Bromma airport: close to Stockholm center. Mainly served by domestic airlines, although there are flights to Brussels. Connection to downtown also with Flygbussarna,  cost 69 SEK (130 SEK round trip).

By Train

SJ, the Swedish railway company: Take trains to Stockholm Central Station.

By Car

A major artery through Sweden is the E4 highway, which passes right through Stockholm, past the Karolinska Institutet (see map).

Accommodation in Stockholm near the Karolinska Institutet

Participants - apart from invited speakers - have to organize their own accommodation.

Some suggestions (see also map).
Stallmästaregården: Top class hotel & restaurant in an old inn at a lake.
Elite Palace Hotel: middle class hotel, possibly the closest to the Karolinska.
Hotell Haga: budget hotel.

There are many other hotels in the downtown area of Stockholm, see hotel section in the official visitors guide, the-hotels.com, the yellow pages, or some of the dozens of other internet hotel booking services, which may also list the above hotels. Or check out Youth Hostel listings.

How to get to the Nobel Forum (see also map)

The Nobel Forum is located in the Karolinska Institutet complex. When you enter the Karolinska Institutet through the gate from Solnavägen, the Nobel Forum (picture) is the first building on the left.

From Stallmästaregården: Turn left on the little road in front of the hotel/restaurant, pass under the railway bridge and walk to the large Norrtull traffic intersection. Cross the intersection via the pedestrian overpass and walk along Norra Stationsgatan until you come to the bridge that passes over the railway. Cross the railway and the E4 highway on the bridge - this is Solnavägen. At the end of the bridge on the left side is the Karolinska Institutet.
ALTERNATIVELY, a shorter walk through the grounds of the Karolinska Hospital will get you there as well. The green path on the PDF map shows the way.

From Palace Hotel: Turn left as you exit the hotel, take another left into the small side street, and turn left again on Norra Stationsgatan. Follow then the instructions for Stallmästaregården.

Subway: The closest subway/metro/tube station (in Stockholm called tunnelbanan) is Sankt Eriksplan. Walk along Torsgatan and Solnavägen to the Karolinska Institutet.

Bus: there is a bus stop in front of the Karolinska Institutet. Bus 3 (blue line), as well as the red bus lines 73 and 77 stop there. Line 3 stops at Tegelbacken, near the central station, line 73 passes through Norrtull and Roslagstull, and line 77 passes through St. Eriksplan.

Car: From the E4: From the North take exit to Norrtull and then follow along Norra Stationsvägen, cross the Solnavägen bridge. From the South take the exit to St. Eriksplan, drive along Norra Stationsvägen and pass underneath the Solnavägen bridge, turn immediately right and circle up to cross over the Solnavägen bridge. There is parking on Karolinska Institutet campus for a fee (use machine at entrance).

How to get to the Wenner-Gren Center (see also map)

The Wenner-Gren Center is a high tower in the north of the city that can be seen from downtown along Sveavägen. From Stallmästaregården you walk along the road to the tower. See the green path on the PDF map.

Using public transport

You can either get the special Stockholm card for 1 [260 SEK], 2 [390 SEK] or 3 [540 SEK] days at selected sales spots, which includes entrance to 75 museums in the price.

Alternatively, you can get 1 [95 SEK] or 3 [180 SEK] day travel passes for public transport at SL centers, some kiosks and commuter train stations, or coupon booklets (either 10 [80 SEK] or 20 coupons [145 SEK]) at manned subway stations in addition to the previously mentioned places. For travel in town, 2 coupons will be stamped, you can travel for 1 hour and switch freely between bus and subway. A single trip can also be purchased on the bus or at subway stations, but will cost you 30 SEK.

A map of the central Stockholm bus lines has been taken from the SL, the Stockholm Transport company, web site, which has bus, subway, and commuter train (pendeltåg) information and timetables, including a commuter train map, and the price lists.
